Romans 6:7 (ESV):
“For one who has died has been set free from sin.”

Addiction, whether to alcohol or drugs, is a devastating force that grips the lives of millions, leading them into cycles of dependency, despair, and destruction. It’s a heavy burden that not only affects the individual but also their families, relationships, and entire communities. However, there is hope for those caught in the chains of addiction. The Bible offers a powerful promise in Romans 6:7: “For one who has died has been set free from sin.”

Understanding the Bondage of Addiction

Alcohol and drug addiction is more than just a physical or psychological issue; it is a spiritual battle. These substances offer a false sense of relief, a temporary escape from life’s challenges, but they ultimately lead to a deeper sense of emptiness and despair. Addiction is a form of slavery—it controls the mind, body, and soul, preventing individuals from living the life God intended for them.

The Death That Sets Us Free

Romans 6:7 speaks of a profound truth: through spiritual death with Christ, we are set free from the power of sin. When Jesus died on the cross, He took upon Himself the sins of the world, including the sins of addiction. By believing in Him and dying to our old self, we share in His death and resurrection. This spiritual death symbolizes the breaking of sin’s hold on our lives, including the bondage of addiction.
